On Tuesday, CHEER volunteers went to Devonshire PALS for the first day of our winter camp. There were a lot of fun and cool activities that were planned. From 2:00-3:00, Hannah and Gianna prepared rock paintings for the kids. By the end of the hour, we were able to see the creativity of everyone. For the second hour, Hannah, Jerry, and Angela had an amazing demonstration of robotics. It was the robotics kit from the FIRST Competition that they had attended. In the end, all participants were able to have fun and learn something new! Thanks to all of the volunteers and their parents who were willing to take time out of their busy schedules!
Personal thoughts as camp coordinator:
As today is the first day of the camp, I believe that it went pretty well. However, some small points should be mentioned.
First, we should have brought more small brushes, since there weren't enough.
Second, I believe that rock painting was a good activity and one that everybody enjoyed; however, after half an hour, the kids just got bored of it and started playing the games in the room. We probably should have found a way to make the kids more engaged in our activities or planned something for them afterward.
Third, since all of the kids went to play games at around 2:35 when we set up the robotic demonstration at 3, they didn't want to come to watch. It wasn't until about 3:30 that the director came and was able to get some audience for the robotics demonstration. Hannah, Jerry, and Angela had a very amazing lesson planned but weren't able to finish due to the short amount of time. We probably should have found a way to get the kids to watch or ask for help earlier. I think that these three points were the only concerns, at least from my viewpoint. Considering it was the first day, everything was really fun and enjoyable!
